Today is a very small drill.
Logic works with terms, logical operators and
propositions (sentences). There are two kinds of terms: term-subject and
term-predicate. Simplest proposition consists of one term-subject, one
term-predicate and logical operator called “operator of assertion”, which bonds
these two terms together in one sentence:
"Object s has
attribute P",
"s is such, that P
" ,
"s is characterised
by that which is P "
This is all same thing, just
different words used for the same logical operator of assertion. “s” is term-object and “P” is the term-predicate, or attribute.
Examples: The Grand piano has
three legs. The African guy is black. The dog is angry. The sun is hot.
Terms-objects are: The grand
piano, the African guy, the dog, the sun.
Terms-predicates (or attributes)
are: three legs, black, angry, hot.
As you see, operator of assertion
can be expressed in different ways. In Russian language it often doesn’t have
any expression at all, or just a dash sign (-).
To make the sentence look standard in logic, we have to talk ugly. I
have some Russian examples in Russian version of this exercise. However, English
gives us a word “is” , or “has” which is
used for operator of assertion, but not only for this.
Please make couple examples on
your own. If it sounds too easy, please do it anyway. We are taking day by day
baby steps. Also, it will help to perform these drills in both languages. This
way you will understand the subject deeper, and learn the language that you
know less.
